Together we can do something good

One of the worst problems for 2-3 billion people in the world is cooking on wood fires. They cook slowly and the smoke causes glaucoma and lung diseases for exposed women and children. They also burn too much fuel, so it must be gathered from greater and greater distances.

In many places fuel wood is disappearing at a rapid rate and the level of concern is very high.

Each group of items costs 30 Ksh. Food items clockwise: cabbage and two onions; 5 large eggs, 6 tomatoes; 1/2 kg of white rice; 6 bananas; 1 kg white potatoes; a loaf of bread and greens; 3 ears of fresh corn; 1 kg of Mahindi flour for ugali. By using a SunGrill, people can buy food instead of fuel. With mounting urbanization, African populations are increasingly shifting from fuelwood to charcoal for domestic cooking and heating.

The shift from fuelwood to charcoal, even if it lasts only a few decades, could have major ecological consequences if it is not kept under control.

There are significant health benefits associated with cleaner fuels due to reduced exposure to toxic indoor air pollutants .

More than 1.6 million people (400,000 in Sub-Saharan Africa), mainly women and children, die prematurely each year from respiratory diseases caused by pollution from fires for cooking and heating homes. By 2030, smoke from such fires is estimated to cause 10 million premature deaths. The promotion of cleaner, more efficient technologies for charcoal production in Africa is thought to have the potential of saving millions of lives.

It’s going to take a while to change the mindset, but that’s how all things develop - with patience!
